Summary/Abstract: The Institute of National Health for Performance Sport (UNZ VS) was established in 1985. This institution, which was to care for the health of Czechoslovak athletes, was also liable for the system in which they were doped, especially with anabolic steroids, under the pretence of “comprehensive care”. The establishment of the UNZ VS was the culmination of many years of effort to create such a system and protect its agents from criticism and the laws of the state. This effort stemmed not only from the response to the international situation in sports in the 1970s and from the ambitions of the individual agents, but also from the political interest to make sports the showcase of the regime.
