Summary/Abstract: Two groups emerged within the "Maspok" movement: one was the state leadership of the republic, the other Croatian nationalists operating within the civil society. "Maspok" leaders legitimized their authority on the national mobilization of the wider public. The national policies of Yugoslav Communists and self-management, along with the strengthening of European and global market integrations, represented favorable structural conditions for the rise of Croat nationalism.
