Summary/Abstract: This introductory article investigates the historical and intellectual origins of the French personalist movement. It focuses on the social and spiritual factors at the beginning of the Thirties in the last century that gave rise to the “third force” movement in France as well as in some other European countries. An analysis of the historical context in which the personalist movement came into being shows that the vision of restoring the lost integrity of Western civilization on the basis of a renewed Catholic religion was the chief spiritual and intellectual driving force behind the whole movement.
