Summary/Abstract: According to Slavic beliefs, also present in other peoples, humans are not the only humanoid creatures in the world. It is believed that before the Flood or before the emergence of present-day humans, the earth was inhabited by some “wild creatures”, who lived in remote places, far away from people or even from the sea. People can contact some of them without jeopardizing their own lives, but not the others. These “wild creatures” are frequently referred to with the names of neighbouring nations, which due to their different language and culture are treated as “alien”. Specific characteristics of the “wild creatures” are then transferred onto certain minorities, which suggests a low status of the latter in the society.
