Summary/Abstract: This study tries to analyze the way that colours were represented in the 17th-18th centuries’ texts. As it was impossible to fix a colour at the same intensity on a textile, the vocabulary was also unstable. In order to name a colour, people of the old times used to maje analogies with natural elements. The effect was plastic, but the semantic precision was lax. Anyway, studying colours in the old texts is an important source for social history, as it reflects some social practices and mentalities and proves that language is an essential mirror of the civilization and cultural level of a certain society.
