Summary/Abstract: Most of the difficulties regarding the definition of populism come from its portrail as an ideology. Even if it is an “ism”, populism is not an ideology, as is does not meet the specific requirements of such a phenomenon. Populism is a propaganda technique belonging to any and all ideologies, and in certain conditions (political crisis, economical crisis, ideology deficit) it has the tendency to become autonomous in relation to the political system. in these cases it extracts themes from all ideologies in order to coagulate the discontent of a volatile electorate towards an electoral success.
