Polish Literature for Yiddish Readers: Yiddish Translations of Polish Literature [trans. Monika Adamczyk-Garbowska]

Summary/Abstract: Translations of world literature into Yiddish have existed from very early stages in the development of its written history. Literary works were translated or adopted into Yiddish first from German and Italian, and later also from French, Russian and other languages. Translations of more exotic languages were made through translations to neighbouring or better known languages spoken by Jews. Although Jews lived in Poland for almost a thousand years, it is quite surprising to see that there are relatively few/little translations from Polish literature into Yiddish. The suggested paper will attempt to review and analyse who were the Polish writers and which of their works were translated. The paper will also present the translators and will discuss the question of how these translations were received in the Jewish literary milieu in interwar Poland.
