Cultural Turn in Translation Studies

Summary/Abstract: For nearly two decades now, in Western translation studies ‘cultural turn’ has been a key term used to refer to a complex of processes which result in expanding the traditional boundaries of the discipline, especially by shifting the main stress from the linguistic paradigm to much broader areas of cultural studies. Translation stopped being perceived merely as interlingual or intertextual transaction, to become a multidimensional process of intercultural negotiation. The paper presents the main tenets of the turn and discusses its consequences for contemporary research: the interrogation of some long-held assumptions, e.g. the notion of equivalence or the position of translator; the shift from product to process/agents analysis; emergence of new fields of research, like the sociology of translation. Special attention is given to ethics and intervention as topics in translation studies today, with feminist and postcolonial schools as examples.
