Keywords: names for house/home; literary Arabic
Summary/Abstract: The lexicographic basis of the study is the literary variety of Arabic. Apart from investigating the lexemes which mean ‘home’, such as bayt, dar, manzil and maskan, an attempt is made to establish the common derivatives of the lexemes with this meaning in other Semitic languages. A claim is made that the predominant meaning of the Arabic lexemes in question is ‘dwelling place’. This is shown to be reflected in the cultural context, including the tents and terrains inhabited by Bedouins, as well as topographical names in the Middle East.
