Circulation of Don Quixoteʼs Spanish editions in Transylvania (XVIIth-XIXth century)

Summary/Abstract: Old prints of the famous Don Quixote literary work, identified in traditional Transylvanian libraries, illustrate the Transylvanian interest in Spanish traditions and customs, a consistent contribution to the Romanian-Spanish cultural relations. Successive editions in Spanish are not numerous but they are among those known and appreciated by the European bibliophiles. For a wider circulation and better accessibility, the well-known Cervantine work was translated and re-edited in other languages of Transylvania such as German, French and Hungarian. Consequently, Cervantesʼ main work was more popular among laic and clerical environments, being present in private and institutional libraries, a testimony to the Transylvanians’ preference for a remote Latin country like Spain.
