Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to present the history of the idea of Great Hungary as an elemen of Hungarian nationalism, and to indicate its geopolitical significance. It wa formulated in the sixteenth century and from that time it influenced the shape o Hungarian politics. Initially, it did not have a nationalist character, but it changed i the nineteenth century, especially after the Treaty of Trianon, when it became th foundation of Hungarian independence aspirations and the expression of opposition t the provisions of this treaty. The article explains how the idea of Great Hungary survived the communist period and was reborn in the 90s of the last century. Although it is no longer political in nature, it has a great influence on Hungarian national patriotis and irredentist tendencies. Although it is not part of the political program, it is deeply rooted in the collective consciousness of Hungarians, affecting the perception of Hungary and their geopolitical position.
