Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the study is to estimate the connections between coping models after cancer diagnosis, the perceived social support and some personal and medical determinants as gender, age, optimism, some medical characteristics as recurrence of cancer. The research methodology that provided the data for analysis of the variables are: a modified “Sources for social support scale” (SSS, Carver, 2006), Optimism and negative expectations Inventory (Velitchkov, Radoslavova & Rasheva, 1993) and a modified brief COPE (Carver, 1997). The sample included 117 persons with different tumor localization. The results show that the closest sources of perceived social support (partner, parents and children) function as predictors of preferred individual coping mechanisms. Personal, socio-demographic and medical characteristics have an impact on the preference of certain strategies, but in none of the cases analyzed were they the only determinants of the choice. Optimism and negative expectations function as third-level factors in cases of engagement with specific coping strategies. The study results can be used for development of an effective model of psychosocial intervention for cancer patients, which enhance their quality of life.
