Summary/Abstract: The present text focuses on a particularly important written source for the history of higher education in northern Transylvania between 1565 and 1626, more exactly a register comprising loan contracts for the financing of university studies abroad. The agreement protocols were concluded between the Lutheran Church, the Bistrița Chapter, and young men, along with their guarantors. This source, studied partially and superficially in the 19th century strictly from the perspective of the evolution of local education in Bistrița, has a greater significance in regard to the efforts made by the community to form and perpetuate its own intellectual elite, regardless of the social-economic condition of young men capable and eager to complete their education. The authors of the study deal with the history of setting up and administering the fund, who were the beneficiaries and guarantors, the conditions for granting the loans. The information provided by the Bistrița register is integrated into a larger prosopographic context, aiming to contribute to a deeper understanding of the support provided by Transylvanian communities to students, with the end scope of aggregating an intellectual elite, educated in Central and Western Europe.
