Summary/Abstract: Throughout the history of civilization, there have always been residential areas forming the major basis of urban settlements, but as the size, nature and function of settlements changed with the coming of industrialisation, so did the character and location of residential areas and the housing typologies that evolved with those changes. This paper attempts a brief analysis of the history of the development and spread of suburbs around the established towns and cities in Britain, from the time that they began rapidly industrializing, early in the 19th century.
