Summary/Abstract: The article describes consecutively the process of study of the most famous archaeological monuments of Middle Ages Moldavia – Old Orhei. It has drawn researchers' attention for a long time. In an early stage of the investigations during the XVIIIth–XIXth centuries, attention was essentially focused on the question of the location of this monument on the map of Moldavia, but the location was only defined in 1946 by Gh. Smirnov, who placed it, not without grounds, on the right bank of the river Răut, between the villages of Trebujeni and Butuceni. Since then the archaeological studying has been carried on with some recesses up to the present and the main results are revealed in the works cited in the article
