Summary/Abstract: The article presentsan analysis ofmasculineand femininenounsdenoting professions in English and Slovenian. Theresearchedexpressions are first discussed from the point of view of word-formation (derivation and compounding), then corpora are employedto examine thefrequencyof the formsin both languages. The corpus data arecomplemented with ananalysis ofcollocators with the purpose of identifyingthe semantic preferencesand associative meaningsof gender-marked expressions for professions. The results reveal that some femininenouns forprofessionsarestylisticallyunmarked(especially in Slovenian), whereas othersco-occur (in English and Slovenian) with wordsthat reflect the societalattitudes to gender roles, appearance and character.
