Summary/Abstract: Problem behavior and psychological disabilities are 3 to 5 times more common in children with mental retardation. The causes are related to biological and functional disabilities, and the environment in which those people grow up. Differences and lack of clarity in the symptoms, as well as communication problems render recognition and treatment of those disabilities in children with autism difficult. Professionals do not have enough knowledge and usually use pharmacological treatment, as well as correction and control of behavior, which often leads to negative results. Professionals need to have specialized knowledge to appropriately address the problems of persons with mental retardation. There are no specialized institutions or psychiatrists who can support persons with mental retardation in Croatia. That is the main reason for inadequate support and care for their mental health. Experience of other countries teaches us that team work of professionals with knowledge in different areas of expertise is needed for adequate support. I shall herein analyze diagnostic methods within multidisciplinary team, and the most important guidelines and strategies for treatment.
