Summary/Abstract: Talking about photography is, no doubt, a commonplace nowadays. Its contribution to shaping concepts about the world we live in is overwhelming, proving and documenting life in every aspect, from the portraits of the persons we love to the phenomena that take place inside the atom. The first amateur or professional workshops opened in Transylvania very soon after the photography had been invented, and they multiplied quickly as it was happening throughout Europe. The links between towns and villages, the large access to information of those living in rural areas made the characters immortalized by the photograph to be more and more interested in those images. Aspects of the Transylvanian world – men with bright faces, aspects of daily life, homes and traditional interiors, schools, churches – were captured on photographic paper with skill and a lot of artistic taste. The photographer of the second half of the nineteenth century was, in his way, an artist.
