Summary/Abstract: The present study attempts to conduct an analysis regarding the profile of the metal detectorists in Romania in the past 20 years. It is a complex phenomenon that has undergone changes, transformations, evolutions and it should not be overlooked. It started in the 90’s as a simple “obscured rush for treasures”, of the inhabitants of the Orăştiei Mountains area where legends of fabulous treasures of Dacian gold, hidden in the “citadels on the tops of the mountains” were still alive. It continued in the 2000’s, with the systematic activity of several organized groups compe¬ting for the areas with archaeological potential, passed through a recoil between 2005 and 2010, when the criminal cases known as ”the Dacian Gold” were at their peak, finally the years after 2010, when the phenomenon acquires national coverage and complexity amplified by the media, by the return of those left to work abroad and now ”European citizens”, but also by the poor management of the public institutions, and highly publicized cases at the expense of the archaeological sites.
