Summary/Abstract: India is a very complex sociolinguistic eco-system in which some languages are propagated as public languages, while the majority are used for private communication. English entered this eco-system as a language of foreign traders, however, two centuries later its influence and status in Indian society changed as the eco-system accepted it as a dominant and key language associated with prestige, good education and prosperity. This paper presents the hierarchical model of public languages in the Indian sociolinguistic eco-system and describes the roles that the English language has in contemporary India today. This contextualisation is used for better understanding of the emergence of Hinglish in Indian public communication. Furthermore, this paper points out the absence of linguistic definition of Hinglish and looks at sociolinguistic reasons for its emergence in the Indian subcontinent.
