Summary/Abstract: One of the most important issues of the theory of nation and nationalism is how to define nation. This issue gives rise to a debate about the objectivity of elements included in the concept of nation and doubts about the formation of this concept. There are two theories which could answer these questions. According to Ernest Geller, a proponent of Modernity, nation is a product of modernization, something that was formed and created and can therefore perish, i.e. become outdated. On the other hand, Anthony Smith claims that the roots of nation can be found in Premodernity, which implies that it exists independently of social conditions.
