Summary/Abstract: The present paper is not intended to be an exhaustive study on the subject, but rather an approach to the construction of the feminine and the image of the virtuous woman in the first novel written by Benito Pérez Galdós. The introductory part includes some reflections on the female pattern that links morality and religion, built in nineteenth-century society, and a brief paragraph about the relationship between Galdós and the popular novel, since the image of the virtuous woman offered in this novel shares some similarities with the feuilleton novels’ heroines. The paper focuses on the character of Clara as she represents personification of all the stereotypes that correspond to the female androcentric ideal, and contrasts it with other female characters to show which role the Canarian novelist wanted to concede to the woman of his time.
