THE HISTORY OF FOUNDATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SURGICAL DENTISTRY AND MAXILLAR-FACIAL SURGERY OF BUKOVINIAN STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY

Summary/Abstract: Facial surgery and surgical dentistry in Ukraine and in Northern Bukovina in particular has a rich and vivid history. The first schools of dentists were founded in the 19th century. In Western Ukraine, the Department of Dental Care was founded in 1828 at the University of Lviv, and its head, Carl Procop Caliga, created the first textbook for dentists, and published it in German. The founder of Ukrainian maxillofacial surgery is the prominent 19th century surgeon Yuri Shimanovsky who made a powerful contribution to the development of surgical dentistry in Ukraine. During the 19th century, Ukrainian medical science as a whole and dentistry in particular, recei-ved significant development.
