Film Adaptation as Translation: Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never let me go

Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with those mechanisms that make possible the transference of meaning from art in the medium of language (literature) into art in the medium of cinematography (film). In order to discover and analyse these mechanisms I have dealt with the idea of film adaptation as translation and I have exemplified and analysed notions from both media by using as reference points Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go” and its adaptation to the medium of cinematography, the film entitled “Never Let Me Go”, directed by Mark Romanek. As theoretical background, I have made use of notions from translation theory, such as intersemiotic translation and I have analysed the criteria that a film adaption must meet in order to be valid. I have reached the conclusion that Romanek managed to translate the message of the novel, as well as its “tone, value, imagery and rhythm” by using tools which are specific to film-making.
