Summary/Abstract: The article begins with some background about the rapid decline in the use of Galician in recent decades, with habitual speakers of the language now numbering below fifty per cent ofthe total population for the first time in history. Moving on, the article analyzes the process of standardization in Galician, following the theories of Heinz Kloss and Zarko Muljacic, and taking into account the historical relationship between Galician and Portuguese. The Norwegian model of co-official standards is examined as a potential strategy to reverse the process of linguistic substitution taking place in Galicia. The study highlights the similarities and differences in both cases, and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of adapting the current approach to corpus planning in Galician to allow for the dominant standard and the minority reintegrationist (or Portuguese) standard to be legally recognised as co-official varieties.
