Summary/Abstract: For centuries, imagination has been a phenomenon to which philosophy and science remained skeptical. Rationalists treat it with mistrust, close to rejection, while German idealists remain cautious viewing imagination as inferior to reason. It was not until the end of the XIX-th century, in the writings of the American pragmatist Charles S. Peirce, that imagination was identified as a necessary element in the cognitive process. It could be viewed as part of Peirce's method of abduction or the ability of reason to offer valid hypotheses based on the already acquired knowledge about the objective reality. In this article we look at some of the main philosophical interpretations of imagination, trace its connection with Peirce's notion of abduction and show the significance of the abductive imagination in the creation of science fiction.
