Summary/Abstract: While mainly referring to Eugène Ionesco’s famous play The Chairs (Les Chaises) and his pictorial essay Le blanc et le noir, this study aims to identify some characteristics of the Romanian-French author’s entire work. Both the above-mentioned texts, one theatrical, the other one pertaining to visual arts, feature the same artistic strategy of associating elements (words or gestures, for instance) in a very particular way, similar to the technique used by artists to create a collage. Ionesco correlates playwriting to using (non)colours in order to shape a universe marked by uncertainty, anxiety, memories. He places heavy emphasis on the guiding concept of light, thus consciously choosing “to paint” in black and white.
