Summary/Abstract: This paper, entitled The Legislation against Witchcraft in the Ancient Romanian World: a case Study in Historical Anthropology, analyses the laws as a major factor of reducing and controlling the risk implied in illicit religious activities (witchcraft, magic, demonology). The purpose is to show that the codices (pravile), used by the judges in the Romanian communities of Moldavia, Walachia and Transylvania, between the 16th and the 18th centuries, were less stuff in regard to the witches and magicians than the legislative books currently used in Western Europe, which explains partially the lack of systematic witch-hunts among the Romanians.
