Summary/Abstract: To differentiate between ethnographic wood and any other kind of wood, might appear to lack a logical basis, although the trained conservator of this material will be quick to appreciate the distinction. At the outset there could have been no botanical difference. An ordinarypiece of wood was transformed by a tribal craftsman into an object of use or ofritual significance. It may have been fashioned in the form of a spoon, a comb, a totem pole, or a war canoe; it may have been crudely finished or skilfully decorated, but from this point onward it became an ethnographic object and as such was liable to end its days in a museum or private collection. The problems of the conservator may best be divided into two main categories:- The treatment of wooden specimens suffering from damage and deterioration due to natural causes and physical agencies which must include changes in environment;- Consolidation of wood damaged by organic agents such as insects attack and wet and dry rot.
