A Short Review of Theories of the Comic

Summary/Abstract: The topic of this paper is the notion of comic, which is analysed from different aspects and in various contexts. The paper first explains why it is difficult to define this exceptionally complex notion, which sciences such as philosophy, psychology, and literary studies have always been interested in. The main part of the paper analyses the comic through comedic genres, the aesthetic and ethical sides of the comic, the originality and relevance of the comic, the purpose of the comic and the types of laughter, as well as through the sources of the comic and comedic devices. The paper ends with a short overview of the characteristics, professions, and situations which separate the people who can laugh from those who cannot.
