Impact of EU funds on the spatial and functional transformations as illustrated by the case of the city of Ostróda

Summary/Abstract: The article describes the impact of the grants financed from the general budget of the European Union on the spatial and functional transformations as well as development of the city of Ostróda. The timeframe includes two main stages of financing: 2004.2006 (IROP) and 2007.2014 (DEP OP and ROP for Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodship). The projects that had direct impact on the changes in the spatial or functional area of the city were analysed. The largest number of investments was implemented under the Regional Operational Programme for Warminsko-Mazurskie Voivodship and the highest costs were incurred under the Operational Programme Development of the Eastern Poland. 80% of all investments are related to the support of the tourism industry potential; the processes of revitalisation also play an important role. On the basis of studies carried out, it may be concluded that the city took has taken full advantage of the opportunity created after Poland’s accession to the European Union. What is more, many investments would not have come into existence were it not for the financial support obtained.
