Indices of Water Resources Exploitation

Summary/Abstract: The objective of the article is to present the currently applied indices of the use of water resources. The analysis includes the following indices: volume of river outflow, re-tention of river outflow, structure and dynamics of water abstraction for the main sectors of the national economy and the water exploitation index. Particular attention has been paid to the concept of the water footprint. This index was introduced to show direct water explo-itation in the country as well as the level of indirect water consumption in the process of producing goods and services consumed by inhabitants. In Poland, in the years 1996–2005, the total water footprint was estimated at 1405 m3/ inhabitant/year and is close to the glo-bal average.
