Summary/Abstract: The less developed a state is and the less adequate its mechanisms of market control are, the more difficult it is to prove abusing the dominant position in the market. The US and EU have taken measures against different kinds of monopolism. On the other hand, countries of the former Eastern Bloc cannot claim praise for similar activities. Since illegal activities are most conspicuous in the spheres where there is more contact with ultimate buyers, or to be more precise, in food items retail, the author has chosen this segment of the market in order to show the most important tendencies. This text also features a proposal of how to improve market behavior in Serbia. The proposal has two segments: 1) Forming an independent institution (agency) for constant monitoring; the agency would employ proven experts in the field and it would watch and point at instances of abusing the dominant market position. 2) Strict enforcement of law in all cases of market misbehavior.
