Summary/Abstract: This article presents a literature review on the current state of the teaching of civic education in Bulgaria in comparison to the members and candidates of the European Union and resumes the important common challenges faced by the educational systems in the field. The literature studies include contemporary pedagogical, legal and sociological documents and the source of the data presented in Eurydice Citizenship Education at School in Europe – 2017 report. Based on a study of the current legislation of the country, a detailed presentation is included on the objective of the civic education in Bulgaria, the regulation of the classes in the subject, the educational background of the teachers and specific measures such as the students’ government, all in a comparison with those aspects in the countries in Europe. This article also describes the challenges Bulgaria faces in building the programs and in teaching civic education in a European perspective and underlining the common challenges for the members of the European Union.
