Summary/Abstract: The study discusses numerous variants of Serbian and South Slavic folk songs and legends about the hero who came late to the Kosovo Battle 1389 and died in a heroic way (Stefan Musich, Vasojevich, Radich etc.). Songs and legends are interconnected on thematic, structural and ideological plan, and they are analyzed as intratext in relation to intertext of the Kosovo legend as a whole. Legends outline topical identity of the belated hero, they refer to accounts of particular sites, they create realms of memory (les lieux de mémoire), or construct legendary familial ties with belated heroes who are proclaimed to be originators of a line of descent. Songs add different sorts of intertextual relations, connotations, allusions and poetic ornaments which enrich the meaning. Special attention is paid to elucidating various layers of tradition and their meaning, poetic devices, cultural and ideological functions.
