CURTAINS AND DETAILS OF STAFFAGE IN PORTRAITS OF BISHOPS IN THE ALTAR APSE OF THE BASILICA OF SANT' APOLLINARE IN CLASSE

Summary/Abstract: Purpose of the Article. To identify the informational and symbolic role of the veils and staffage in mosaics with portraits of bishops in the altar apse of the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare in Classe. To analyze whether the images of architectural details and fabrics had real prototypes in the church ceremonial of that time, or they were used on mosaics only as decorative objects that have no connection with the rite and the meaning of the image. The methodology of the study includes formal, comparative, historical, iconographic and semiotic methods.
