An Overview of Printed Works Entitled “Encyclopedia of the Qur’an”

Summary/Abstract: The number of works entitled “encyclopedia of the Qur'an”, that emerged in the third quarter of the twentieth century, is increasing day by day. Qur’anic encyclopedias have been prepared in many languages around the world. This study aims at a general evaluation of the studies entitled “encyclopedia of the Qur’an”. Qur'anic encyclopedias differ according to; their preparation, format and content. Different ways can be followed in the writing of Qur'anic encyclopedias. While some studies may be individual products, group or institution studies can also be found. There are also studies in the form of a compilation. About the audience of these studies; there may be different groups such as public, academic community, the young or children. There are both writed and translated Quran encyclopedias according to their forms of preparation. There are different formats of encyclopedias of the Qur'an such as; form of brief or wide exegesis according to mushaf, form of the Qur'anic sciences, form of questions-answers, form of surahs, book series studies and –as common format of encyclopedias- articles-based ones. Encyclopedias created as articles have also different volumes and contents. In addition, there are “encyclopedic dictionaries” about the Qur’an. We can say that all these studies, which appear with different content and species, are divided into two main types, with a more general evaluation. Namely, while some of the Qur'anic encyclopedias are devoted to the definition or content of the Quran; some of them come in the form of a guide to the Qur'an and tafsir readings or research.
