Summary/Abstract: From the perspective of African American authors, the South has never stoppedostracizing black people. To achieve this, it makes use of a racist ideological attire which someauthors like Gaines strive to invalidate. On the backdrop of a socio semiotic reading, this paper firstexplores the segregationist discourse aimed at reifying the Black and then refusing him any social, cultural and economic development. Then it deals with the reaction of the African Americancommunity. First they display a timid response as they do not oppose the racist language of thesuperstructure with a militant collective consciousness. However, by re establishing the black man inhis lost dignity through a messianic character, Gaines ennobles him and rids him of the enduringprejudices and degrading clichés.
