Summary/Abstract: An Egyptian of Tunisian origin, Ettounsi was exiled in France where he resided from 1919 to 1932. He bequeathed us texts where he evoked without complacency the Orientals’ outlook on the Westerners – that is to say, above all, the women. This is an anachronistic, biased look. The Oriental is reduced to a “rastaquouère”, on the Latin American model. The lesson of B. Ettounsi is that the identity, reduced to appearances, is only grotesque folklore and that it is advisable to look at oneself without sparing oneself.
