Summary/Abstract: In this article the author gives the mechanisms of the competition between Ukrainian and Jewish population for cities in Western Ukraine at the end of ХІХ and beginning of ХХ centuries, showing the attempts of ethnic majority to change the existing ethnic and cultural division of labor etc., The main reason that Ukrainians rejected full integration into town lies in the specific nature of traditional society mentality. For them one of the most important values was the land and with the land many-century practice of passing social consciousness is related. The fact that the matter was about so-called primacy in industry and trade activated the question about ethnic nature of communities and groups.
