Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of the most conspicuous morphological aspects of the national variety of the Italian language, defined by the term “italiano dell'uso medio”. This category emerged as a result of the growing deviation and distance from the canonised language and its strict grammatical norms. The most distinctive trait of this linguistic variety is the simplification of the paradigms of standardised Italian and the creation of a “new standard”, for which the presence of informal and colloquial language features is specific. In the corpus, the specificities of the “italiano dell’uso medio” variety are analysed through three sociolinguistic variables: diatopic, diastratic and diaphasic. The results obtained confirm the basic hypothesis of the paper: “italiano dell’uso medio” variety is used at the national level, most often by highly educated speakers, members of the middle or high social class, aged between 14 and 55, and almost always in informal or only partially formal communicative contexts. All deviations from the standard language result in partial or complete identification of the “italiano dell’uso medio” variety with the colloquial variety of the Italian language.
