Summary/Abstract: Mouffe criticizes liberal democracy's models of aggregative and deliberative democracy for basing it on economic and ethical concepts and failing to grasp the antagonisms that establish politics. Instead of these models, she suggests a model called agonistic or radical democracy. She claims that this model will tame antagonisms and turn it into agonism. For this, she makes the ethical-political principles of liberal democracy such as freedom and equality a prerequisite for agonistic contention. Although she considers pluralism as the constituent element of modern democracy, she limits pluralism to those who adopt liberal democratic principles.
