Summary/Abstract: A witness to the world ruined in the war, Philippe Jaccottet, a Swiss poet, tells about an unusual situation in which a modern human being finds themselves, feeling alienated to their own home and country. Faced with general psychological emptiness, Jaccottet, like his predecessors Hölderlin and Gustave Rouault, launches himself in the research of ‘space’, more in its philosophical sense than as a spatial property. In this paper, we expose our considerations on the concept of ‘space’ in Jaccottet’s work, relying especially on his ’notes-seedlings’ from Seedtime, Notes 1954-1967. We come to the conclusion that the poet, haunted by the wish for freedom and a haven, finds a tenuous balance between the external and the internal in ‘space’ that he sees as both a closed and a porous area at the same time.
