Summary/Abstract: A liberal look at the role of the public sector, broadly understood also at the supranational level in shaping the stability and security of the financial sector, as well as economic growth had to undergo deep revision. It is therefore justified to analyze the current state of the already achieved and possible to achieve future effects of the nationalization of financial institutions on the example of selected countries of Central and Eastern Europein 2007-2016 with particular reference to Poland. A critical look at the concept of full efficiency and self-regulation of financial markets allowed to show that the full efficiency of the banking sector depends on factors such as the independence of supervision of financial institutions, efficiency of judicial institutions and the freedom to undertake business in a given country, and to a lesser extent to the ownership structure. The role and importance of the state after the 2008-2009 financial crisis underwent a transformation towards the active creation of the banking sector.
