Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the sociological and anthropological aspects of the work of physiotherapists – “professional touchers” – especially regarding the body and touch. It considers them in the context of physiotherapeutic practical learning, which can be seen as an important part in the process of “becoming” a physiotherapist. During this process, students broaden and redefine the semantic scope of the terms “body” and “touch” – that become their work tools as their progress in the medical profession. The specificity of this social role makes the process of socialization happen not only on the level of “thought constructs” (by redefining the structures of the importance of knowledge and building new resources of specialist knowledge) but also at the level of the corporeality itself. Understanding the perspectives and experiences of both students and working physiotherapists helps to better recognise the role of touch and the body in physiotherapeutic practice.
