Summary/Abstract: These last years, the “One Belt One Road” initiative launched by China has opened up new financial and economic opportunities with foreign countries. However, beyond those mainly material exchanges, the “road” also permits contacts with foreign cultures and civilizations. Among those, France (for which Chinese people have always nurtured an exemplary and romantic image) takes a big part: actually, Chinese people – mostly young Chinese people –, are more and more attracted to it, and to become closer to it as much as possible, they started to learn French language. More and more people are therefore going to French Alliances and French departments within different universities all over China. Our case study tries to answer these three questions: firstly, what is the role of French teaching in the promotion of French culture in China? Secondly, given what has been done so far to promote French culture in that country, what can be done further to move France, francophonie and China closer? And lastly, how do we teach French in China and what can be done to improve French courses?
