Summary/Abstract: Romanian electoral law has a specific substance, its autonomy as a branch of law deriving from the fact that it arranges a separate aria of social relations, on the basis of distinct principles. This branch of law regulates electoral rights, organization of electoral processes and the organization and functioning of election administration. Principles of Romanian electoral law stem from international standards in electoral matters and constitutional traits of electoral rights and processes without being confused with them. These principles are legality, equality, transparency, integrity and accessibility. Principles of Romanian electoral law constitute prerequisites for both the law-maker and the judge and have the potential to ensure the juridical security for all participants in electoral processes. They prove their utility especially in the perspective of election law codification and in the case of objective lacunae of electoral law.
