Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the Polish-East Slavic past and present linguistic and cultural borderlands as seen through the prism of the globalizing and localist tendencies shown by the village population of the Lublin region with its clearly defined rural regional identity and self-awareness. Associated with the idea of the so-called ‘little motherland’ and with the cultivation of the regional tradition, regional identity and self-awareness spans two opposing but coherent cultural spaces in which the different language varieties and cultural strands of the past and present are met and reflected in the language of the oldest villagers confronted with present day globalizing tendencies. This study is based on data recorded in villages of the Lublin region.
