Summary/Abstract: This paper researches the stylistic and functional role of Slavicisms in the early tragedies written by Jovan Sterija Popović – Svetislav and Mileva, Milos Obilića nd Naod Simeon (Simeon the Foundling). Initial hypothesis was that the use od Savicisims as distinctive feature of Dositej’s Serbian literary language, a type of Slavo-Serbian language that Popović used, slighltly differs from their use in comedies, and that they do not have any functional role in tragedies. The research showed that the use of Slavicisms is somewhat different in tragedies than in comedies, especially when it comes to Miloš Obilić, where they appear to have functional role in both characterization and enhancement of the dramatic act.
