Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the prose of two Nobel prize winners, Thomas Mann’s short story “The Tables of the Law” and José Saramago’s novel The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, which use the strategy of the counter-narrative to critically question the foundations of religious dogmas, primarily the divine empathy in the juxtaposition with the Biblical narrative and motives of the slaughter of children in the Old and New Testament. The comparative context is provided by parable essays of the Polish philosopher Leszek Kołakowski, The Key to Heaven, and the methodological background is narratology and theory of fiction by Lubomír Doležel.
